It started in the early 1990's, when I lived on an incredible property in Pennsylvania that overlooked the Susquehanna River. I managed a Bed & Breakfast in a 4 story English Manor mansion that had a widow's walk on the roof. In my spare time, I loved going up to the widow's walk and watching the bird's fly by. I will never forget one day when I watched an Osprey hovering about 900 feet above the river go into a dive. Straight down in a flash, it dove into the water and came out with a fish!
I invested in a camera shortly afterwards. That was back in the days of film photography, and I made a hobby of capturing images of the many birds and wildlife on the property while I was there. Many years had passed, and a lifetime later I found myself driving through the Gallatin Canyon in Southwestern Montana every day on my commute to Big Sky Resort from Bozeman. Almost every day I would see Bald Eagles or Osprey sitting in the trees along the river and I decided to invest in a digital camera. I would stop along the river to photograph the birds, and sometimes just the landscape, and my love of photography quickly blossomed from there.
As I gained more freedoms with my job after being promoted, I found myself stopping along the river more often. Some days I would even leave home or work early so that I could stop and sit by the river for hours at a time. I started studying photography and learning about how to manipulate the light, camera settings, and the different cameras that were on the market.
I soon became obsessed with testing as many different camera bodies and lenses as possible. In this process I ended up buying a parts camera for cheap and learning how to fix it and found that I really enjoyed learning the ins and outs of camera bodies, what made them work, and how to fix them. I discovered that I could supplement my income by buying used equipment, refurbishing it, and selling it for a profit (only after I got the luxury of using it in the process). This enabled me to test many different camera bodies and lenses and over the course of the last few years I have deeply immersed myself into the art and craft of Photography.
I have taken thousands of pictures of my family and pets and have also discovered that I truly enjoy capturing the moments of my life. Going through these pictures has become a favorite past time of mine and I have found great joy in capturing the fleeting moments of life. Getting just the right equipment, paired with proper lighting conditions and camera settings, can produce stunning results. It often takes a lot of time and sometimes several hundred pictures just to get a few, or even just one, great shot. But when that one great shot surfaces in the editing process it is one of the most gratifying things I know. To be able to provide someone with that moment, captured in an image, is something I have decided that I want to focus a part of my life on now.
Watching the joy a person gets when they look at an image I have created is one of the most gratifying things I have ever experienced. I love exploring different angles and different camera settings to get a unique perspective. I love the challenge of creating a lasting image that can make an impact on someone's life and tell a story in it's own way.
Life is fleeting. Capturing the moments that form us and bond us with other people and the things of this universe enables us to relive those experiences and build on the inspiration that they can create within us.
