Terry Scussel is a California based photographer whose subjects include the San Francisco Bay Area, Pacific coastal areas, Western deserts and mountains, urban street photography, night photography, travel photography, event photogaphy. His images are processed in color, black & white, and with impressionistic enhancements
I have been a photographer my entire life, which was started when my dad gave me a Leica camera that he had bought the year of my birth in 1948. The Leica is now safely stored away, I have moved through many film cameras and now shoot exclusively with Canon digital SLR cameras. As an avid photography book collector I study the work of the masters and do field work with professionals and amateurs alike to hone my craft and share experiences. Being a good photographer requires curiosity, patience, passion, desire to improve and then the basics of understanding composition, lighting, camera settings, techniques, post-processing software knowledge.
A good day in my creative world is getting up early to catch the good light or catching the twilight, and finding an image to capture from a different perspective. I truly enjoy making a photograph and logging the story behind the experience. Dorothea Lange quoted: “the camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera” – this is a quote to live by.
In addition, Terry is an advocate for people with disabilities and older adults and has devoted much of his retired life doing board work and supporting organizations that benefit these volunerable populations.
Terry is originally from the Chicago area, he grew up and was educated in Florida and has called in Marin County, California his home for over 34 years.
