Hello. Thanks for checking out my portfolio of images.
I think after you take a look at the images on this website you would easily conclude that I love to take pictures.
Born in 1952 in Pittsburg, PA, and now living and working
in Austin, TX, I have been pursuing an avid interest in art
and photography since my early childhood.
I took some college level art courses and have a graduates
certificate from the New York Institute of Photography, but
I would have to admit that most of my working knowledge
has come from my own efforts and experimentation,
inspired by the borrowed knowledge and tutelage of other
pro photographers and artists who I have been fortunate to
have found through a constant striving and desire to
improve my craft.
What Makes a Great Portrait Photograph?
It seems these days with the invention of digital cameras that almost everyone is a "photographer". Some are very good, some - well, fortune smiles on everyone from time to time. Almost anyone can create a "good" portrait photo - and maybe some really very good ones on occasion. But not so many are true professionals who can consistently produce great, high quality portraits with their camera, lighting equipment, and technical expertise in post - shoot processing. So , what are some of the most important elements that combine to make a remarkable photograph?
One of the most, if not the most important in my opinion is lighting. A photographer can have great compositional elements present in a portrait, but if the lighting is flat and dull, then so is the resulting photo. As a professional I have a full arsenal of high - end lighting equipment along with many hours of training and hands - on - experience needed to use it all in a competent and timely manner.
Conversely, a photographer can have an exceptional professional lighting setup with all of the knowledge and skill needed to use it effectively, but if his/her compositional skills and knowledge of how to place the subjects in the picture in a creative manner are lacking, the photo will be only at best average.
Post - Shoot Processing
Having the knowledge and skills necessary to refine and perfect an image in the post - shoot processing stage is critical in successfully producing a stand - out, professionally crafted work of art. With 10+ years of experience learning and working in Photoshop and other photo editing software, this is something I excel in and strive to achieve with each and every photograph I create for my portrait clients.
Of course there are other elements required to achieve a great portrait - the photographer should have great people skills and know how to direct his/her subjects in posing, dress, facial expression, the list goes on. This mostly comes with time and experience on the job, but can also be learned through workshops and the many available books and now online study courses - all of which I have taken advantage of in the past, and will continue to do so for as long as I am producing photographs for my clients.
